課程概述

The course is concerned with the fundamental aspects of gaseous fluids. Distinct from conventional and somehow empirical treatments for the macroscopic properties of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, the underlying structure of gases will be explored. The topics shall cover the equilibrium kinetics, microscopic, quantum-mechanical and statistical-mechanical descriptions of fluid physics. Specifically, three subjects that have not been well accessed to students in mechanical/aerospace engineering, whose significance is gradually appreciated, will be involved, i.e., kinetic theory, quantum mechanics, and statistical thermodynamics. Relying on the progress and available time, some applications such as chemical kinetics and reactions would be discussed in due time.

1. Introductory kinetic theory: Pressure, internal energy, and temperature; Mean free path; Transport phenomena; Molecular magnitudes; Perturbation of equilibrium
2. Advanced kinetic theory: Distribution function; Equation of state for a perfect gas; Boltzmann equation; Collision integral; Maxwellian distribution; Mean free path
3. Quantum physics background; Thermal radiation and Planck's postulate; Photons—particlelike properties of radiation; de Broglie—wavelike properties of particles; Bohr's model of the atom
4. Quantum mechanics: Schrödinger's equation; Some examples of application; Hydrogen atom; Multi-electron atoms; Periodic system of the elements
5. Statistical mechanics: Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution; Maxwell speed
distribution
6. Statistical thermodynamics: Partition functions; Computation of
thermodynamic functions; Quantum statistics
7. Chemical processes
